D1 studio asked me to design & animate graphics for Conflux 2019. This project called for a title sequence, title cards, and a handful of print material. The theme for 2019 was 'identity and belonging'. Unlike years past, Conflux coordinators chose to bridge the divide between internal design and the greater arts community in Seattle.

Concept

Our concept recognizes the blending of communities and aims to depict that collaboration through the simple story of “finding a community”. Our aesthetic balanced between crafty and fine art; the resourcefulness of Gen Z inspired a tactile/hands-on look while the industry professionals promoted structure, leading us to lean on traditional chiaroscuro techniques. We felt this blend of perspectives reflected the sentiments of Conflux 2019.

Style Execution

To achieve this hand crafted style, we had to texturize 3D animated scenes with hand drawn elements and then composite the separated renders. To match the charcoal blending aesthetic, layers were matted with smoothed (smudged) edges on top of texturized plates.
